Blood Urea Nitrogen test is routinely done to detect if you have kidney failure. Usually the kidneys filter and transform urea and nitrogen in the form of urine. If your BUN levels are high then that would just indicate that your kidneys aren't doing their job correctly since urea and nitrogen are present in your system.

Kidneys filter out the blood and removes wastes which is ultimately excreted as urine. A high BUN indicates a loss of fluid as a result of dehydration or bleeding, or that the kidney itself isn't functioning properly. A low BUN can be the result of malnutrition, chronic liver disease or fluid overload.
