The current record is 23.13 meters, outdoors. It was done by American Randy Barnes on May 20, 1990 at a track meet in Westwood, California. Barnes also hold the indoor record.

The men's world record for the shot-put is 23.12 meters (75 feet, 10 ¼ inches). This is held by US athlete Randy Barnes who threw this in 1986. The women's world record is 22.63 meters (74 feet, 3 inches). This is held by Russian athlete Natalya Lisovskaya who threw this in 1987.
