English is important primarily as the vehicle of international commerce and trade. The economic affairs of the world are conducted most centrally in English. Also, much international diplomacy is in English, as well as most of the world's leading news sources being reported and broadcast in English. In addition to millions of speakers, millions more are studying it, too.
