The WWF was formed by Vince McMahon Sr., who founded the company in the late 1960's. When he passed away, his son, Vince McMahon Jr., took over (still owns it today), and changed the name from WWF to WWE in the early 2000's.

Vince McMahon Sr. originally started the WWF, after purchasing and taking over a number of different wrestling "territories" around the U.S. After he died, his son Vince McMahon Jr. (who still owns and runs the WWF), took over, and then changed the name to the WWE.

The World Wide Wrestling Federation was formed on January 24, 1963 by Vince McMahon Sr., and was largely a composite of other smaller territorial wrestling promotions. In 1979 they became the World Wrestling Federation and one year later Vince McMahon Jr. took over the company. In 1985, they held their first pay per view, Wrestlemania, which was a groundbreaking success.
