Griffith Compton led settlers in 1867 to the area and the city was incorporated in 1888. Compton has a strong rich black history, especially in local politics which they still dominate in today. In the early 1970s the city was 90% blacks, the largest concentration in the country. At present the Latino community is the largest group in Compton.
