What is the history of text messaging?

The idea grew up in the 1980s and has been developed in 1984 by a Franco-German cooperation. It uses the signaling paths when no signaling traffic exists and thus only uses usually unoccupied resources in the system (which is also why the messages can't be more than 160 characters long)

Before cell phones even existed, many people used these pager devices where one could call a predefined number and leave a message for a certain person on a their pager.

The first text message was sent from a personal computer by a test engineer for SEMA group in 1992. I was sent over the Vodaphone network to one of his friends, Richard Jarvis. The message sent was "Merry Christmas". Texting grew slowly from there to become what it is today.

It was developed in 1984 by a franco-german company. It uses up unused resources of the network. Pager can be seen as the starting point of text messages.

Motorola a leading company in the paging industry wanted to better serve it's customers better and developed a technology that consumers, dispatchers and computers could use to send text messages over a paging system. This advancement in technology hit North America in the late 90's.
