What is the history of basketball?

Although it has grown quickly in popularity, basketball is a relatively recent sport, invented by James Naismith just before the beginning of the 20th century. Naismith, a physical education teacher, first used peach baskets in place of the present day hoops we use today. The NBA, as we know it today, was not formed until the mid 1900's.

Basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education teacher. He created the game to keep students busy during the winters, as they could not compete in sports outside.
