baking has evolved over centuries. This can be dated back first to 300 BC where pastry cooks first emerged. This was a highly respectable profession.

Baking has been around since prehistoric times, when early man used heat and water to make grains more suitable for eating. In ancient times baking began to be used to make delicacies and pastries - especially in Ancient Greece and Rome. It was also a means of food preservation from then until the Middle Ages.

Volumes have been written on this. The first baking would have taken place when the first housewives learned that grains could be ground, mixed with water, rounded into cakes, and baked in the ashes of their cookfires. This remained pretty standard for centuries- cornbread, flatbread etc was cooked this way when my great-grandma crossed to Minnesota in a wagon train.
