Fat32 is "File Allocation System" this was the file system used for all versions of Microsoft Windows prior to, and including Windows ME. It was replaced by NTFS (NT FileSystem).

Fat32 is used on older drive partitions or on newer but smaller drive partitions: mainly anything 4gb and under is considered to be fat32 territory. FAT32 allows for storage and reading of up to 2TB of data: however, it limits the max file size of an item to 4GB only: this is not ideal for someone dealing with large files.

The FAT-32 file system was designed to address FAT-16 shortcomings by allowing longer file names and allowing larger hard drives to be recognized by the Windows operating system.

Every hard disk is formatted in some kind of "file system", a protocol to read and write files on the hard disk. FAT 32 is a file system used by older Windows variants, windows XP was the first to support the newer NTFS file system. Linux and Apple computers usually use a filesystem like ext2 or ext3.
