There were two flags that were used during the era of the American Revolution that had snakes on it. The one with the snake cut into pieces said "Join or Die". The other had a coiled rattlesnake on it and said "Don't Tread on me".
The Gadsden flag has a snake on it, with the words "don't tread on me" to show that the colonists are ready to strike if they feel like they are being walked on. The snake that is cut into pieces was drawn by Benjamin Franklin.
This flag is known as the Gadsdon Flag. The flag says 'don't tread on me'. There is another flag by benjamin franklin with a cut up snake, saying 'join or die' on the bottom. The sections represent the individual colonies.
