Congruent means that the total of the angles adds up to 180°. Equal means that the angles are of the same measurement. For example, congruent angles are 120° and 60°. Equal angles are 45° and 45°.

Congruence refers to one or more properties of objects being the same. Equality, on the other hand, refers to all relevant properties being the same. Triangles can be congruent even though their orientations differ, for example. In general, geometric objects are considered congruent if their shapes and size are the same, regardless of, color, for example.

Congruence is more accurate for shapes and forms (angels and lines are equal degree and length) than equal which does not state that the sides or angles are the same.
