Answer by  malone (4817)

An HVAC tech works on heating and cooling systems, e.g. furnaces, central air, etc. A stationary engineer works on boilers, HRSGs, gas/steam turbines, hot water generators and similar systems. While the two fields have common grounds, a stationary engineer generally works with industrial systems.

The one that does not move is stationary. The technician that works on the unit and repairs it is more of a technician. The engineer plans and implements the job and make very important decisions about delegating duties to the others. The engineer is required to have more education, training, and experience.
