A bassinet is for a newborn. It is generally much smaller and shallower than a crib. Because it weighs less and is smaller, it can be moved from room to room. Bassinets are no longer appropriate once baby starts pulling himself/herself up - the sides are too low.

A crib is made out of wood or metal, designed for a child in excess of 10 pounds. A bassinet is light weight and used for infants under 10 pounds.

The main difference is size. Bassinets are usually smaller and can fit next to the parents beds. A crib is bigger.
