It's time when your child is able to understand the rules of a "big bed" and knows not to get up and down all night, etc. Be sure you take the crib down. Do not give a child a "choice" when he's not capable of such decisions.

When feel that your son is old enough not to fall out of bed, or wonder around the home while others are sleeping, is when you should transition him to a bed.

Not so much an age thing, as a readiness. If your son does not move around alot in his sleep, or if he sleeps in alternative places other than his crib, he may be ready. You can start with just a mattress on a floor, or using side rails for safety. Be sure to use a gate for his doorway.

The age they generally recommend switching from a crib to a bed is around two years of age, but it depends a lot on how much your child weighs, and how mature they are.

When your child begins trying to climb out of the crib, which is a direct indication of interest and desire on his part, it's time to get ready for a big-boy bed. I wouldn't push it because at his age, sleep issues could easily rebound, and his comfort and safety are the most important issues.

This is totally a personal choice. Most of it depends on your and the childs needs. If you are trying to potty train, you want them to be able to get up if they need to go. If they are climbing out of the crib, time for a toddler bed. If they are safe, you can leave them there.

Two is a good age. But be prepared, he might get out of bed and wonder the house. Make sure there are side rails so he doesn't fall out. Check how he sleeps now, sidways, bottom of the bed, this will help you put the rails in the right place.
