A balk is when a runner is on base and the pitcher throws somewhere other than to home plate after coming set on the mound, or if he does not have a discernible pause in his pitching motion from when he comes set and throws.
A balk is the penalty recieved if a catchers feet leave the marked box before the the ball leaves the pitcher's hands. The reward to the other team is that the other team gets another base.
