What is the definition of profanity?

It seems profanity can take on several meanings, depending upon opinion. What is the true definition of the word?

"profane" and "profanity" has therefore come to describe a word, expression, gesture, or other social behavior which is socially constructed or interpreted as insulting, rude, vulgar, desecrating, or showing disrespect.

The root of the word comes from Latin, referring to "not belonging to the church". Generally, it refers to language considered rude, vulgar, abusive, or otherwise offensive to most people.
