Illinois law says if you would just have a forged check in your possession you are guilty. Forgery in Illinois is considered a class 3 felony which can carry the penalty of 3 to 7 years in prison.
Forging checks is illegal in all fifty states. It would be treated as a white collar crime, as it is financial in nature, and didn't involve the use of force or violence.
