Forgery is fraud and is a felony in most states. You can pursue it either as a crime or as a civil action. Under civil law, it can either be identify theft, intentional fraud, or conversion if they stole something. Criminal charges depend on the prosecuting agency.

It's a felony in most cases. If someone has forged your name for something like a credit card or other major things they can be charge with a felony and go to prison. In smaller cases like forging a signature on a letter people sometimes get a misdemeanor offense charge.

Forgery now falls under the heading of identity theft. Since this is being taken more seriously by the government, if you have evidence that would convict someone, then contact the local police or the local FBI office.
