What is the "Challenger Deep"?

The Challenger Deep is the deepest portion of the ocean that has been surveyed presently. It is located in the larger geological feature known as the Mariana Trench, southeast of Japan. It got its name from the British ship, the HMS Challenger which first recorded its depth in the 1870s

This is the name given to the deep water off the Mariana Islands. It was named avtger the British survey ship Challenger II that found it in 1951.
