Deep Cleaning is also called root scaling and planing. This is done for people that have peridontal gum disease. First the dentist gives you an anesthetic to numb you, then uses an ultrasonic scaling machine and scrapes below your gum line. It is a long process as they have to scale each tooth, and do one side at a time.

Deep cleaning gets all the tarter under the gums. It is a more aggressive cleaning and usually takes 2 visits.

Somtimes they will numb you up. They will most likely be cleaning under the gum line. These kind of cleanings are somtimes needed, but are uncomfortable to the patient.
