The Centimeter Gram Second system is a metric system which predates SI standardisation of metric units. The units are defined as a unit of length (cm), weight (gm) and time (second). This system is largely outdated and not practical in real life applications due to the large numbers that would result in using centimeters or grams to describe non-laboratory events.

The CGS system is based on the metric system. This kind of measurement is usually used in mechanical systems, but can also be used to measure electromagnetism. The CGS system uses centimeters as the unit of length, grams as the unit of mass, and seconds as the unit of time.
