If you've never trained a dog, the best thing to do is to enroll with your dog in an obedience class. Avoid treat-training and clicker training. Check out Indian Point Dog Training as an example of what you're looking for: no nonsense training for both dog and owner.

There are many solutions that you can use to find ways to train your dog. There are tutorials that you can look for online. You can also take him to a PetCo that provides training courses and have him trained that way. Or you can hire a personal dog trainer to work with you and your dog.

Go to you local pet store and ask for a recomendation for a good training book. You need to show the dog you are in control and use positive reinforcement. Starting with basics of sit, down and heal are a good starting point. A basic training class may be useful.

First have him run/play for around 30 min, him being tired will allow for better concentration during training. Have him sleep in a crate, feed him on a schedule, and use a "pinch" collar. When he disobeys give a quick but firm tug at the leash and correct his behavior.
