Using a clean cutting instrument, cut root allowing at least a single leaf per each root section. You then cut the leaves back to approximately five inches. Replant, putting rhizomes no more than 1-2" deep. Place your iris where it will receive southern sun exposure; make sure the leaves get full sun benefit. Water the plant.

After the iris has bloomed , dig up the clumps that you want to thin, and gently pull the stalks apart from the rest of the base, to thin out to a more manageable size. Trim back the roots to approximately 5", and trim the top to about 6".

Dig them up carefully with a spade or showel. Separate them by hand if you have multiple flowers. Clean bulbs and roots. Cut the leaves to about 6 inches.

I have found the best way to split my Iris bulbs is to wait until after any frost is gone, and before spring time. I use a knife to cut them, leaving some root intact. then replant and they should be fine. I have done this for years with no problems.
