The most common type of roof shingle is the asphalt type made by pressing mineral granules into asphalt-saturated fiberglass mats. The higher grade "architectural" asphalt shingle is a laminated shingle which looks more like a traditional shake roof. The extra strength of the laminated shingle allows longer warranties and greater protection against the wind.
