Bondo makes good primers for the initial cote that are fairly inexpensive. If you are looking for a more professional look I recommend going to your dealer to get the actual primer color that was used on your vehicle. This might cost a little more but it will look better in the long run.

If you are doing the work yourself, automotive primer such as RustOleum works great and is available at most auto parts stores. Always make sure you patch holes and sand first, though.

The best primer is one that is going to be thick and sand-able. If you can find a self etching primer that will make the job a lot more easy. Use the color that is close to what you are painting.
