Beware, this is one of the biggest ripoffs. Make sure you have a reputable service man that you use all the time. It will cost you more, because of changing hoses, filters, rotate tires, brakes, etc. Having your oil changed 2 or 3 times a year is the best maintenance.

It really depends on how often the car breaks down. But at that mileage a typical major service is required. Often one has to replace the timing belt and its components. Breaks and drive chain also need maintenance. Depending on the brand, this might cost from $1,000 and upwards.

We have a 1994 Chrysler Intrepid and spend between 300-1200 a year on repairs. This year we spent $900 - it feels that the car is near its end. For our model we end up having tire rods and brakes problem, it often depends on your model what goes broken.

You could spend up to $300 as it may be worth keeping for a little longer if it is in good mechanical order. Anything over $500 maybe excessive as the car is getting older.

You need to look at the value of the car and how likely it is to need future repairs. I car that is five years old is still pretty new, so it is probably worth fixing. You should check the value of your car before deciding, though.
