Because the grass is going to be planted in a place that gets a lot of shade, you might consider using a cool season grass. Cool season grasses can thrive without too much sun and are perfect for places that do not get very hot. Cool season grasses include Bentgrass, Kentucky bluegrass, rough bluegrass, red fescue, and Annual ryegrass.

Go to your local nursery and tell them your situation. They have a large variety of grass seeds and since this is a common question, you will find many types that will work. Shade grass seeds work well.

The best grass is Kentucky Blue Grass. Kentucky Blue Grass only requires minimal sun to get a thick sod. That is why it s popular in many estates where the house shades the majority of the lawn.

Spider grass works very well in most areas of the country. you will not get that carpet effect like most other grasses give, but you will not have blad spots on your lawn
