The best age to start lifting actual weights is age 15. Age 9 is too young. However, a child at any age can do exercise where they are lifting their own body weight. These would be exercises such as pull ups, push ups, sit ups, leg lifts, and leg squats.

Once your muscles have pretty much stopped growing, and puberty is pretty much finished, so for a male, I would say around 14-16.

Your son should likely wait until at least early adolescence before beginning a strenuous weight lifting routine. He can injure himself by starting too early, and you should consider visiting a doctor to determine when your son should be able to commence lifting.

18 to 20 years old is a good age, however, you will need a good weight lifting trainer to guide you to avoid injuries.
