A deep stain that also offers weather protection is ideal. This way the stain will complement the woods natural color and not fade with any exposure or overexposure to the natural elements.

Cedar is generally left unstained when used as a decorative wood and allowed to weather giving the surface it's distinctive look, of course the material can be white washed with slaked lime powder and water. Powdered color pigments can be used with a smaller amount of slaked lime as the base to produce stains, this cedar staining requires occasional re-application.

Stains for cedar are many and varied. Once you pick the color of the stain and remember that what is shown on the samples will probably be different than what you see at home due to weather, sunlight and the age of the siding. Clean the cedar of debris and then apply with two days of dry weather.
