What is meant by "New York Style" cheesecake?

The reason New York Style Cheesecake is called that is because it differs from Traditional Italian Style Cheesecake. Italian style cheesecake uses a combination of Ricotta cheese and Mascarpone cheese while New york style uses Sour cream and Cream cheese. This give the cheesecake the same texture but the flavor is completely differnet

There are two different styles of cheesecake, 'New York Style' requires it to be baked, whereas the 'French Style' only requires the cake to be refrigerated before consuming.
