"La Chanson de Roland" is the oldest work of French literature. It developed from earlier folk ballads about a brave leader, Roland, who was killed with all his men in an ambush, telling the story of his bravery. Legends embellished and altered the original facts. Some think the Roland character in Steven King's Gunslinger series is adapted from this Roland.
