IP subnetting is breaking IP addresses into groups which have distinct routing prefixes. A group might have IP addresses from 123.123.123.1 up to 123.123.123.255; this is a subnet, written 123.123.123.0/24.

Subnetting is the division of usable IP addresses into smaller more manageable network sizes. This is done by borrowing bits from the network portion, allowing fewer hosts on a network.

Subnetting refers to a subnetwork. Subnetting consists of network computers and devices that have a common, designated IP address routing prefix. All hosts within a subnet can be reached in one 'hop' which suggests that all hosts in a subnet are connected to the same link.

Subnetting was introduced in 1985 to overcome some of the problems that the internet was beginning to experience with the two-level addressing system, resulting from internet routing tables starting to grow. Subnetting adds a third level to this hierarchical system.
