Before you are baptized, you meet with missionaries who teach you the covenants and commitments you will make as a member of the church. Once committed, you are baptized by immersion by one holding appropriate priesthood keys. After you are baptized, you are confirmed a member and given the gift of the Holy Ghost, thus baptized by water and fire.

There is not a ceremony involved besides baptism. Usually, an "investigator" will be taught all required gospel principles by missionaries when first learning about the faith.

To join the church, you must accept Joseph Smith as a prophet, follow the 13 Articles of Faith, pay a tithe to the church, follow the Mormon food and modesty laws and undergo baptism by immersion in front of witnesses, from a church elder or the missionary who converted you.

Converting to Mormonism is more complicated than most other religions. You must declare believing in 13 articles of faith, give 10% of everything you earn to the church, and undergo a baptism. You will also be asked to read The King James Version of the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrines and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price in full.

To convert to Mormonism you do have to learn the religion and take classes and be guided. Also, you must be baptized as Mormon.

Generally, there is a series of "discussions" done at home (or at the church) with the Mormon missionaries, followed by an interview with a church leader, and then a baptism.
