Select a containe shape and drag across with Gradient Tool. White-to-black gradation is indicat in Gradient Pallet. Gradient Mesh tool is use to render complex gradations and shapes. Gradient "Mesh" is created, A grid pattern overlaying your shape. Grid is control with Pen Tool. Drag anchor point.

The following are the step by step procedure. Select shape and drag in gradient tool-indicate white to black gradation in pallet-for difficult and mutifaced gradation, mesh tool is used- mesh is created- grid is controled through pen tool.
