There is natural stone. Dark granite is the best because it is denser and won't stain as easily as marble or other stone surfaces. Duracite or other fabricated solid surface materials are good too. The main thing to remember is stain-proofing. Your traditional Formica is, but the design spectrum is limited.

You could get one close to your already existing counter top, or connect one to it. There are ones that you could put in the middle of your kitchen, for entertainment purposes. A neat one would be in the corner of your kitchen or dinning room. I like tile tops.

There are a huge variety of option for a bar counter top, some of which include steel, wood, ceramic tile, stone, manufactured materials(corian), marble, or granite. The downfall of tile is that you have grout lines to keep clean. I like natural materials like stone or granite as they are durable and easy to maintain and keep clean.
