DHCP (literally "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol") is simply a way for your computer to get a temporary address. All computers on the Internet must have unique addresses to be able to communicate with each other. Most servers have permanent addresses and most PCs have temporary ones. DHCP is the way your ISP assigns your computer a temporary address.
