DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol; it is used to automatically assign IP addresses to devices on a network, rather than having to set them manually on every device. A DHCP server needs to be present on the network to assign devices IP addresses; this is often handled by your modem / router.

It is a part of TCP/IP protocol that can automatically assign an IP address on your computer and other information you need for your computer to connect to the network.
