There is no thermostat "dial" in a car. The thermostat in a car is a device in the engine. As the engine warms up it stay closed. Once it reach operating temperature it opens. If your engine is getting too hot then you need to replace it.

The thermostat dial in a car is there to inform the driver as to the temperature of the engine. This dial reacts with the temperature of the fluids within the engine.
