Without the exact computer code, there's no way to tell. Start by having the car's OBDII code read. For this, you can take it to your local AutoZone and they'll read it for free. Advance can read it as well, but they don't have the proprietary VW codes. As a last resort, you can take it to a VW dealer.

Obviously you have a problem with the vehicle. It could be caused by something as simple as a loose fuel cap or possible something worse. Either take it to a dealer or buy yourself a code reader to get the codes.

Your malfunction indicator lamp will come on for a number of reasons. It is not possible to detect the reason simply based on the light. You need to take the car to a mechanic who can read the sensor code identifying the problem.

Your electronic control module has stored a "trouble code," which indicates that it has detected a problem. Best to be checked by an automotive technician with a scanner.
