If the tooth has had a root canal and is still infected the dentist will do an apicoectomey. They will go cut the gums a little, where the tooth is so they can see it from the outside. He will be able to find the infection better and fix it.

Apicoectomy is a surgical procedure done to remove infection from the tip of the root. If the periapical pathology or abscess is large,it cannot be drained by root canal treatment, resection of the root tip is done and the root ends are sealed followed by root canal procedure. It is sometimes done in cases where there is failure of root canal treatment.

An apicoectomy is necessary after a failed root canal due to necrotic tissue at the base of root. The process involves opening a flap in the gums, snipping off the bottom of the root, and filling the resulting hole with filling material.

This is kinda like a root canal but the apex of your tooth is the bottom of the tooth. So, usually that means getting ride of the bottom of the tooth but leaving the crown of the tooth in your mouth so that you can keep your teeth instead of having an extraction.

A apicoectomy is a surgery intended to remove infection in the root of a tooth. It is sometimes preformed when a root canal fails. An apicoectomy is also called an endodontic microsurgery. The procedure takes between 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the situation. Typically, 3 to 4mm of the tooth canal are cleaned during an apicoectomy.
