Too much of the day is spent on paperwork and making sure that all procedures are followed to the T so as not to foul up a case. Detectives must be expert multi-taskers and highly organized.

I would say most of the day, they are probably at their desk doing paperwork for all the cases they are trying to solve. There would only be a little bit field time.

The joy of detective work is unpredictability. Whether the detective is a criminal or private investigator, the job is solving puzzles of differing difficulty and importance. For a take from tv dramas, read Alexander McCall Smith's detective novels. For reality, take a citizens' police course with your local department.

It's not anything as shown in the movies but it usually involves checking website resources for information, finding and asking people, and other field work like that

A detective's day is not unlike many other office jobs. The detective works in an office, and will start the day by reviewing case files at his desk. He will do research on those files, and sometimes he will go in the field for research.

Lots of marital cases, spying on spouses and the like. It all depends on if business is doing well or not, and on location. Some days there's nothing to do at all, the advantage of being freelance.

There is no typical day for a detective. If you are on a police force, be prepared for paper work, lots of question and answer with neighbors and witnesses, and a little investigation.

You usually have a workload of cases you are responsible for, and go from the most serious to the most likely to be solved a.s.a.p.
