The thermal coupler keeps the gas flowing in your water heater, furnace etc. The pilot heats it, it produces an electrical charge. If that is interrupted, your gas flow stops.

The thermo coupler is a small stem next to the pilot light with a copper wire coming from it. It extends to the fuel supply box where the dial is.
