A Protestant religion (or, more precisely, denomination) is best defined negatively, as any sect that self-identifies as Christian, but is neither a part of the Roman Catholic Church, nor any of the Eastern Orthodox movements.

Protestant basically means any Christian denomination that is not Catholic. There are a wide variety of Protestants, from Episcopalians to Baptists to Pentecostals.

Yes, there are many denominations of Protestantism. The "protestants" were people who followed Martin Luther by protesting the practices of the Catholic Church, and formed their own church with its own leadership. Also the Protestant version of the bible had some books taken out which are still present in the Catholic one. Technically it is not a new religion though.

A 'protestant religion' is really any Christian sect that arose from the Protestant Reformation of 1517 initiated by Martin Luther with the publishing of his 95 Theses.
