A paralegal is very specialized administrative assistant - specific only to lawyers. Their duties (which require training and certification) include: research assistance, helping lawyers write briefs, find out the law etc.

Paralegal works for a lawyer, and carries out tasks resulting from a decision made by a lawyer. Their schooling is less involved than that of a lawyer. They do not make decisions, but can assist in obtaining information for a certain result. They have the same familiarity of the law, but cannot exercise it in a court of law.
