To start out your best bet would to work in an attorneys office in some capacity because that would give you a basic understanding of basic law protocol. Your duties could include, assisting attorneys, filing their paperwork and pleadings at the court house and a lot of research.

Paralegals assist lawyers. Their roles vary greatly, depending largely on the lawyers and their practices. Many paralegals draft simple form documents (wills, court pleadings, deeds). Many coordinate with clients. Some do legal research. Often the paralegal will be responsible for maintaining and organizing lots of documents, including client files and electronic documents.

Paralegals assist lawyers in their cases. Paralegals themselves are not lawyers or officers. You would have a much more specific knowledge of the law whereas a lawyer's knowledge is much more broad and expansive. This is why paralegals are so helpful in cases.

Paralegals also known as legal assistants are starting to perform many of the same tasks as the lawyers that they work for except for giving legal advice and presenting cases.
