A paralegal certification can be earned far faster (and more cheaply) than law school while making a slightly lower income than a lawyer.

A paralegal works for a an attorney or law firm doing low level legal work. The pay is generally decent and paralegals can move up and gain lots of responsibility. It's also a good stepping stone for getting into law school. It's a good way to get involved in the legal job market without having to go to law school.

A paralegal can perform many tasks a lawyer can but charges a lower fee, thus is more desirable to clients. However, a paralegal does not require a doctorate in law or law school, so they do not have the same educational financial burden as lawyers. Thus the lower fee rate is offset by the lower cost of getting the education.

Paralegals do the basic work that lawyers don't have the time or desire to do. They can work for private firms or for the government. The average paralegal makes between $30,000 and $50,000 per year.
