An end is a goal. The means is how you get to the goal. If you have a great goal but immoral ways of reaching it, you have a problem.

Think of "end" as the result or goal. "Means" are the strategies and actions to get there. "The ends justify the means," implies that the goal is so valuable it is okay to get there however you can. Example: Robin Hood steals from the rich to give to the poor.

This phrase refers to an action you perform (usually something you dislike) that has to be performed in order to get to a goal of some sort. College, for some people, can be considered a "means to an end" in order to get the job they desire.
