What is a macerating toilet?

Answer by  dhd (93)

A macerating toilet contains a grinding pump to assist in flushing. This means that it can be installed on top of a finished floor, without having to install a new flange and drain, and typically without installing a vent pipe. They typically can also pump waste water from a sink or shower in the same room.

It's a type of toilet that liquifies the waste, creating a slurry before mixing with the flushing water for disposal.

This is an old European design not commonly found in the U S. It's ability to macerate hardly justifies the additional installation expense.
