Stairways are generally narrow, so any color that make the space seem open and large would be ideal. My suggestions are whites, off-whites or pastels. You may also want to coordinate with the paint color of the surrounding rooms, stair carpet color or wood finish. Look through interior decorating magazines for more ideas.

Since stairways tend to be connecting points in a home, it's a good idea to use a color that flows from the downstairs color scheme to the upstairs color scheme.

You can paint your stairway the color of either the rooms or spaces at the end of the stairs so there is a cohesive flow. You can also pick a totally different color of your choice that matches the theme in your home. Darker colors should be avoided because they will probably make the stairway feel like a cave.
