Granite is an excellent counter top choice. It is very durable and holds up nicely. A granite counter can be expensive and probably one you would want to live with for quite awhile. If you like to change the look often or expense is a factor, go with formica.
Granite. It can take the everyday abuse of even the busiest of kitchens. It withstands heat and can take the cutting of pizza (or ANY food) directly on its surface. Never heard of it staining and is easy to clean with just a warm sudsy cloth (it can also be cleaned with a non abrasive cleaner).
A non-porous material, like marble, granite or tile are great, but expensive. Formica is inexpensive, and quite serviceable. Corian is a brand name and is very good but expensive.
